Public Works Department


The Public Works Department Is composed of four (4) divisions: Street and Park Maintenance, code Enforcement, Planning, and Building Maintenance. The Director of Public Works, who serves as the Chief Building Official, Zoning Administrator, and Floodplain Administrator in addition to his other duties, supervises this department. Public Works construction activities are coordinated and monitored by the Director of Public Works. The City's solid waste collection is a responsibility of the Public Works Department also. Public Works offers services essential to our daily lives.

Streets and Parks Division

The Streets and Parks Division is supervised by the Public Works Superintendent. Duties of this division are widely varied and include maintenance of over 300 miles of streets over 34 miles of major drainage ditches, numerous miles of drainage facilities in subdivisions, repair of streets and utility street cuts, street sweeping, installation and maintenance of signs and signals, cutting of weeds and high grass on streets and drainage rights-of-way, mosquito control, dial-a-truck household pick up, maintenance of 19 parks encompassing over 235 acres and one swimming pool. In addition, this division is responsible for weed abatement and housing demolition when private property owners do not comply with City codes.


Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Division is responsible for assuring and protecting the public's life, health, safety and welfare through enforcement of codes and ordinances of the City. Building and construction permits are issued in the Public Works Office in the basement of City Hall. In addition to enforcing the building, plumbing, mechanical, gas, electrical, and swimming pool codes, inspectors enforce environmental test codes and ordinances pertaining to substandard structures, zoning regulations, weed abatement and nuisances such as trash, litter, and abandoned vehicles.


City Planning

The Planning division under the supervision of the City Planner is responsible for the comprehensive planning process (long range planning) of the city and in that regard administers the land regulations ordinances. On a day-to-day basis (short term planning), the Planning Division prepares and processes all rezoning applications, subdivision plat reviews street abandonment's, and conditional use permits that are heard by the Planning commission each month. In addition, this division processes all variance and special exception requests that are heard each month by the Board of Adjustments.


Building Maintenance

The Building Maintenance Division, under the supervision of the Building Maintenance Superintendent, is responsible for the maintenance of twelve (12) City buildings. In addition, it is responsible for custodial services in City Hall. The 12 buildings include five (5) fire stations, four (4) neighborhood centers, City Hall, Public Works, and the animal shelter.
